Tenth Birthday celebrations for the Vale Walking Festival

Valeways has launched the details of this - our tenth - Vale of Glamorgan Walking Festival from Tuesday 21 - Sunday 26 May. The theme for this Spring is the Year of Discovery - and the Festival crowns a decade of celebratory walking in the beautiful Vale.

"It's an expanded event again  this year, due to popular demand - we've got six days of really varied themes and exhilarating walks, so that people can discover some secrets of the Vale's landscape, find out about its natural history and human heritage too, says Valeways Chair, Phil Gibbins. "We'll be travelling back in time to look at the stories of Dinas Powys Hill Fort, and stepping forward in time, we'll be revealing medieval secrets of the area around Llandough."

During the Festival, walkers will also get the chance of a close-up look at wildlife around both Wenvoe and Lavernock; a chance too. to follow in the footsteps of Wales's controversial and rascally chronicler, Iolo Morganwg; and to discover of what  made Barry great with a ramble around Victorian Barry Docks.

In all there will be twenty-eight walks, varying in length from one to twelve miles. "There'll be something to suit all levels of stamina" says Phil, "and this year, again, every walk will be free. All you have to do is just turn up."

"We know from past experience that both locals and visitors to the Vale really value this free aspect of the Festival. Visitors, in particular, tell us they can book a stay in the Vale, knowing they get to make last-minute choices of a wide range of treks at short notice - having some idea whether the weather will be on their side. So, in addition to giving residents a great week, we're in the business of increasing tourism too."
